Richard R. Boersma, M.S.

Licensed Professional Counselor

I've enjoyed providing therapy and counseling guidance for the past 35 years, and have decided to close my office practice effective January 1, 2020.  From this point forward I offer cognitive, learning, and psychological assessments (for agencies, schools, and individuals), and 2) continued consultation with previous/recent clients by phone or computer, with occasional face-to-face sessions.  I am not accepting new patients.

You may contact me via my cell phone to discuss an evaluation or to set up an appointment.  Please call my former office for that number (970-879-7637).

Since beginning my psychotherapy practice in the mid-80's, a great deal has changed in mental health services in the Yampa Valley, and the public perception of what it means to seek professional help.  I remember being 1/2 of the entire Mental Health Center staff (that facility was located in Hayden in those days, to service communities in Moffat, Routt, and Jackson counties).  We weren't very busy, the two of us.  Back then, rural Colorado still saw our clients as weak or a bit crazy, so our services were not in great demand.  Those brave pioneers who knocked on our door helped begin the change we see today, in understanding the value of outpatient counseling.

That little mental health center expanded to have multi-staff facilities in all our larger communities today (now known as MindSprings), and there are over 40 licensed psychotherapists now practicing in the three counties as well.  We've grown up!  Steamboatcounseling.com is your portal to licensed therapists in Steamboat Springs.  If you are seeking someone who seems to fit your needs, I encourage you to “test drive” two or three individuals before deciding.  You need to feel comfortable in sharing your personal concerns; take your time.
