Abuse & Recovery

This category refers to the aftermath of having experienced severe personal abuse or family trauma, whether in an ongoing relationship or as a child, and whether a single incident or an ongoing pattern of victimization.  Often we deal with these painful scars after reaching adulthood. If the abuse is current, please contact the Department of Human Services (if a child) or Advocates Against Battering and Abuse (if an adult).

Dissociative Disorders

Dissociative thinking is a mental disconnection of one’s thoughts, feelings, memories, actions, or sense of identity. It is a protective reaction to severe trauma, but when it continues it can become a serious problem in itself (e.g., lack of emotional feeling, amnesia, multiple personality disorder).  Although no professional identified this as a primary focus of his/her practice, many therapists in our area have had experience in treating dissociative syndromes.  Contact me for a referral.

Life Adjustment

This is a broad, non-clinical category encompassing a wide range of issues.  It refers to the problems resulting from a crisis or change in circumstances of life, which often make coping more difficult for a time.  While there are several therapists who identify this as a specialty, virtually all practitioners have had considerable counseling experience with adjustment problems.

Most therapists can help couples work through conflicts and disputes, i.e. “mediate.”  However, Certified Mediators have additional specialized training to resolve issues of divorce settlements, child custody, workplace issues, and arbitration.  The professionals listed here are Colorado-certified mediation specialists.

Men’s Issues

readmore hand

This is a broad, non-clinical category, and targets problems common to men.  For example, men frequently have trouble with anger control, workaholism, and connecting with their emotions.  Their male perspective can also limit the intimacy of a relationship. Consider other therapists not listed here, if you believe your issue is better defined as a relationship issue, alcohol/drug abuse, or some other problem.

Personal Improvement

This specialty concerns enriching one’s potential for enjoying life, by confronting negative inner beliefs or hang-ups. Many people discover a greater fullness of life -- in relationships, career, or self-awareness -- once they understand how ‘old tapes’ have restricted their potential.

Personality Disorders

This is a broad area, and includes such diagnoses as Borderline Personality, Narcissistic Personality, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality, and others.  It is always best to see someone who identifies this area as a specialty.  However, you will also find that most practitioners have had experience in treating most personality disorders.

Psychological Assessments

Agencies, employers, and others sometimes need to evaluate individuals according to their psychological profile, their ‘match’ to a situation or role, or their intellectual and emotional assets and needs.  This specialty area uses psychological questionnaires, tests, and interviews to gain such insights quickly and accurately.

Sleep Problems

Sleep difficulties can cause or add to the stress of living, and can be dangerous to safety and personal health.  In addition to the professionals listed here, be aware that the Yampa Valley Health Center has a Sleep Center with an emphasis on medical issues impairing sleep.

Sexual Difficulties

Sexual difficulties range from male erectile dysfunction to incompatible sexual needs or desires in a relationship.  These are different from problems of sexual maladjustment (see below), and are usually treatable by many experienced therapists.  The fact that no professionals have listed this as a specialty does not mean there are no competent therapists in our area.  Call or e-mail the person of your choice, to ask if he/she is skilled in this area.

Sexual Maladjustment

This category refers to unusual sexual interests or practices that result in problems for the individual or others (e.g., voyeurism, porn addiction, exhibitionism, gender confusion, etc).  Treatment is a clinical specialty that is best handled by a someone with specialized training.  Although there are no area therapists who have identified this category as a top area of their practice, this does not necessarily mean you must leave the Yampa Valley for treatment.  Send me an anonymous e-mail and I will suggest a name or two for your consideration.

Thought Disorders/Psychosis

Some mental health problems cause the individual to confuse or distort reality to such an extent that everyday living can be a problem.  Schizophrenia is the most common psychosis.  Treatment usually involves medication.
