My Therapy Title

A successful therapist does not stick to one treatment method, but instead draws upon many clinical skills or approaches. The counseling technique should fit the individual or presenting problem, and not the other way around. This means I’m familiar with a large number of different techniques and counseling skills, and will use the approach that promises results based upon clinical research and my own 20+ years of experience. A few of these are briefly discussed here.

  • I am what is called a Solution-Based Therapist. That is, I help you identify the issue(s) that brought you into my office, and keep us both focused on resolving them. You can read more about this by clicking here.
  • Insight therapy underlies most of my counseling. I strive to distill the underlying motives and dynamics that drive a person’s behavior (or persons, in couple or family therapy) so this knowledge will become more conscious -- and thereby more manageable.
  • Of all counseling techniques, I’ve found Cognitive Behavior Therapy to be among the most helpful methods, and I use it extensively. CBT has application to many problems of living, and has broad appeal to people of all ages. Click here to read more about this.
  • Hypnosis and relaxation methods can be useful for some problems that do not respond to face-to-face “talk therapy.” Learn more about my hypnotherapy methods by clicking here.

Again, these serve only as examples of some of my therapeutic methods. Other techniques include Family Sculpting, Field Therapy, Gestalt Work, Reality Therapy, Person-centered (Rogerian) Counseling, and more. While some practitioners may declare themselves strictly Jungian, Transpersonal or “spiritually based”, I strongly adhere to an eclectic philosophy of treatment. Again, the method should fit the individual, not vice-versa.

Perhaps it is also important to note what kinds of therapies I do not practice or am not trained to provide. These include biofeedback, EMDR, art therapy, child (play) therapy, religion-based counseling, psychodrama, pain management, or psychoanalytic (Freudian) therapy. Please be aware that I cannot prescribe medication, but work closely with my colleagues Dr. William Philip and Margy Bookman in this regard.
